TY - JOUR AB - Adolescence is conceptualized as a phase of life in which both psychic and social transitions must be mastered. The empirical analysis is focussing on structural conditions dealing with educational and familial contexts of the passage from adolescence to adulthood. Four hypotheses are tested with psychosomatic symptoms as dependent variable. The results presented are based on a questionnaire survey carried out on 201 students aged 13-16. The results show that psychosomatic symptom frequency in adolescence is reinforced, when adolescents experience educational downward mobility and when ambivalence exists in the relationship to their parents. Multivariate analysis shows that these effects are cumulating in dilemma situations, in which social conditions cannot be influenced by adolescents once they have occured.
