TY - CHAP AB - Starting from quantitative aspects of the role a hospital plays in the care of oled people, we state that hospital is the institution which provides the safety net for old people in problem situations, compensating and substituting for insufficient services. We mention the dominance of this institution specially because it is from here that the access to other care facilities is being controlled. The hospital takes on the character of a junction and, at the same, that of a distribution centre where streams of patients are being filtered and channelled. We refer to the status of old aged patients in hospital as well as to some structural contradictions in the behaviour of the hospital staff – especially those which become effective when old aged patients are being discharged. We attempt to give an insight both into the practical realization of the hospital staff’s function to refer and into those mechanisms which entangle the old aged patients in a “Merry-Go-Round-of-care”. It appears that along with the referral goes an adaption of the patients which greatly reduces the old people’s ability to mobilize their own potential for acting and coping by themselves.
