TY - JOUR AB - This article takes as its point of departure the fact that processes of cooperation between hospital physicians and social workers have, up to the present, not received enough attention in medico-sociological studies. Taking the question of the allocation of responsibility for care, therefore, it looks at where the two professions overlap, examining first of all how each profession sees the other and how they experience the cooperation. It goes on to point out three central forms of cooperation and the patterns of interaction peculiar to each. Here, discrepancies and conflicts become apparent which clearly indicate that abilities, objectives, and treatment methods frequently intermesh poorly. These discrepancies correspond to the change these professions are undergoing in modern society. What is required are exchange processes which, based on a common interest in action, are aimed at transforming this mainly formal cooperation into one determined by realities, as a way of remedying the two professions’ problems of compatibility.
