TY - JOUR AB - Self-help groups have become firmly established in health care. While the self-help movement came into being at the same time as criticism was being levelled at shortcomings of the medical and social care system., it nevertheless became established by settling in the niches of this same system. It is here that self-help groups are increasingly assuming the role of "mediators" between the official care system and its users. Taking the example of self-help groups of women with cancer, the present article examines the question as to what forms of “expertizing” are associated with the performance of this “mediator” function, and what consequences this development brings in its train.
