TY - JOUR AB - Using appropriate analytical methods, the kinetics of the degradation of inner and outer peptide bonds in polypeptides can be distinguished, if these are build up by the same amino acids. Polypeptides built up by mono-amino acids containing different aliphatic and aromatic residues on the -carbon atom are studied. In the acid hydrolysis of these polypeptides the hydrolysis constants for the inner and outer peptide bonds, respectively, show a characteristic variation with the substitution. This may be explained by assuming that the degradation of outer peptide bonds mainly depends on inductive effects, but the degradation of inner peptide bonds depends on steric effects. For the formation of oxazolide-2,5-diones by the action of phosgene on amino acids suspended in dioxane, inductive effects are most important for the reaction rate.
