TY - THES AB - The circular dichroism in the photoelectron angular distribution of randomly oriented free chiral molecules from enantiomeric pure samples of camphor and bromocamphor was investigated using circularly polarized light with a photon energy from 13.2 to 24.2 eV (vacuum ultraviolet). Forward-backward electron emission spectra were recorded simultaneously with two spectrometers at several opposite angles relative to the propagation direction of the photon beam and compared for each of the two substances. Measurements were also carried out for reversed light helicity and opposite molecular handedness. This dichroism effect was observed for the first time. In particular a strong forward-backward asymmetry with respect to the propagation direction of the light was observed. This asymmetry can reach values of several percent. In a subsequent study the dependence of this asymmetry on the excitation energy and the binding energy of the photoelectrons was examined in detail showing strong variations of the asymmetry, with respect to both the binding energy and the photon energy. This behavior indicates, that the initial and final states in combination with the chiral geometry of the molecules influence the asymmetry. The experimental results confirm theoretical predictions based on the dipole approximation.
