TY - THES AB - The spouses of dementia patients are considered a strongly burdened group of family caregivers. Diagnosis and assessment of their specific problems are specially interesting in the context of the psychosocial counselling of caregivers. In an explorative study 18 advisory cases of marital partners of dementia patients were evaluated with a qualitative research approach orientated on the Grounded Theory. Discussion of the results: (1) The dementia causes a dramatic marriage crisis and following a crisis in the life concepts of the affected people. The phenomena show up as an erosion of companionship and intimacy, cause conflicts in loyality and confidence, concern questions of sovereignty, equality, power and organisation of the everyday life, as well as the balance between justice and love. (2) The alterations of the relationship can be understood as incomplete passage of status in the meaning of a toppling figure, in which alternating aspects of the marital relationship and aspects of the caregiving relationship are prevailing. (3) Seeing the core of the difficulty in the relation crisis has implications for the psychosocial counselling of caregivers. Instead of perceiving the consulters as individuals, as mostly done, it is important to focus topics of the couple and to bring not only the caregiving but also the romantic relation into the fore of the counselling. But a precondition for that is to diminish the shortcomings of theory regarding the topics of the couple in the caregiver counselling.
