AB  - What do PhD candidates, practitioners, and professors from sociology and history do to clarify their occupational destinations, and accordingly the occupational destina-tions of PhD candidates they supervise? By means of the analysis of qualitative in-terviews I argue that PhD candidates, professors, and practitioners essentially accept the question of occupational destinations for historians or sociologists – doing or holding a PhD – as an open question. The reason for this PhD candidates, profes-sors, and practitioners give is: They answer the question of occupational destinations typically only under condition that PhD candidates or PhD holders are looking for funding – before, during, or subsequent to a PhD project.
