TY - JOUR AB - This article postulates a proximity between the early sociology of social problems and social historical approaches. Starting from there, the sociology of social problems and also the journal Soziale Probleme are put in a longer time frame. The conclusion briefly argues to include impulses from practice theory. Two questions are at the center: First, how and from which perspective were relevant categories of order (society, state, structures) analyzed. These categories were only seldom discussed critically after the field had left its initial phase during the 1970s and 1980s. Moreover, these entities were studied in a top-down perspective and transnational transfers were merely reflected. Second, how did authors in the research field position themselves towards the cultural turn? There were no explicit controversies over cultural approaches, and definitions of the relationship between society and culture remained weak. Founding the journal Soziale Probleme in 1990 was a clear statement at a time where growing attention was paid to cultural approaches. As the publication profile of the journal indicates, it has been a forum for widely defined theoretical reflections on social problems and social control, while studies on state control and state sanctions were prominent. Since the early 2000s, the great openness regarding research on globalization and also towards a reflected transnationality based on local practices is remarkable.
