The paper was accepted as a doctoral thesis within the Doctor of Public Health Program by the School of Public Health at the University of Bielefeld (Germany) in summer 2005. It explains the interaction between epidemiology and law in the field of radiation protection and its legal regulations. An in-depth view is given to the joint influences on lawyers and epidemiological researchers.
Chapter 1 introduces the scientific background of radiation protection. Chapter 2 explains the legal background of radiation protection law in Germany. In chapter 3 the diverse influences of epidemiology on German legislation, jurisprudence and law literature are analysed.
Chapter 4 deals with conflicts in the communication process between lawyers and epidemiologists.
Chapter 5 gives a summary of the results.
